Unit 7 Math Messages

7.1 Math is Fun Intro to Exponents. Gives some basic info
7.3 Brainpop has a fun intro page, can't do much else without a subscripton
7.3 Discovery education video on Scientific Notation, A Segment of: Standard Deviants School: The Zany World of Basic Math: Module 05: Integer Grab Bag has been downloaded to the S: Drive
7.4 Funbrain has an order of operations site. Remember "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" In an expression, use parenthesis and exponents first. When that is done, please remember to divide and multiply. Last is add and subtract.
7.4 or 7.5 Mathgoodies order of operations site goes nicely with or to substitute for today's math message, also see Math is fun which has an order of operations site with examples, directions and "your turn" problems at the bottom, might be good for whiteboards. The top problem is solved at the bottom, so if you want the students to solve it that would be great. If you do the quiz, students will want something to write on, also a calculator might be needed, they are challenging.
7.5 A Teacher tube video on PEMDAS, actually GEMDAS, it is given by a student using a tablet and would be an excellent introduction or a review.
7.5 A Teacher tube rap, ridiculous but funny.
7.5 Cool Game-Order Of Operations Millionaire-could be a whole lesson, whole class, then students could use the computers after..
7.5 Game-Math Playground-Order of Operations, fill in the missing numbers from a table to complete a number sentence.
7.6 Create a Line Graph but wait, try this link for an easier to use interface. I was considering having the students create the data such as steps to cross the room, then graph it. Make it a double line by adding boys vs. girls or odd student numbers vs. even. Just don't make it too competitive, keep it fun. Then they should be able to do the journal pages.
There is a Maths Mansion Video on positive and negative numbers, called "The Negs" on Discovery Streaming
7.7 and 7.8 Math is fun-here is a site for basic info on positive and negative numbers. Also goes on to describe operations such as negative/negative, etc. Make sure to click the link below the number line where it says (This is the Number Line, read about Using The Number Line)-Click on that, it has a great example that is interactive that you can click through. There are some great stories at the bottom, Spend some time here, have students make up their own. This would be a great video podcast or Mr. Stick Podcast project for the students.
7.8 Teacher Tube Video on subtracting negative numbers. It's pretty funny and from COLLEGE!
7.8 A speedboat racing game that uses adding and subtracting of positive numbers,
and also a game that has simple ordering of negative and positive numbers
from free training tutorial.
7.8 Adding and Subtracting Integers Jeopardy from the math Integer Games site, also try mystery picture, click on the problem then the answer to reveal a mystery picture.
7.10 What is a number sentence? See the kindergarten math site
All math sections-try http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/grade-5.html
